With ScanNav, prepare your next coming cruises at home by examining maps, create waypoints, routes, calculate distances... After your navigation, continue enjoying your trip by analyzing all details of your track that will have been memorized on your pc.

Charts: You can use commercial charts or create your own charts from a simple desktop scanner, or even correct any existing raster charts.

Navigation: Plug your GPS and other NMEA instruments, and your boat will be positioned real time on the map, keeping track of all your movements and giving you all navigation information.

SnTides which is based on the SHOMAR engine will provide water levels with a worldwide coverage.

Optional Modules let you survey other vessels with the AIS module, predict weather forecasts in GRIB format, take in account Tidal currents, and combine information to calculate a Routing...

Supported charts:
These are the Official vector charts issued directly from the different nations' Hydrographic Offices, according to the SOLAS convention for human safety at sea.
They are available by predefined packs or by custom selection of individual charts, and can be downloaded with an Internet connection
nouveau This raster charts offer is directly issued from the geotif provided by the SHOM(*), and is updated once to twice a year. The offer covers the entire French coasts, with 3 available packs (Channel/Atlantic/Mediterranean), each including the integrality of existing paper charts.
(*) The Channel pack includes large scale charts from the British Channel Islands that  have been derived from data provided by the UKHO.
This offer requires ScanNav version 12.1 or higher.

Navionics charts

These are private vector charts, edited by Navionics and packaged by area on SD-Cards or CF-Cards.
They are supported in ScanNav starting from version 8.0 and upper.

These are private raster chart scanned by Maptech from the original paper charts. They are packaged by area available on DVD or CD rom.
For more information on the different types of charts we recommend reading the SHOM articles available at:

Charts workshop :

Besides the support of the different types of standard charts, ScanNav lets you build your own digital maps from your paper charts. A simple desktop scanner is sufficient, the charts workshop integrated in ScanNav will do the stitching of the different scanned pieces, and the georeferencement of the result in latitude/longitude.

You can also use the charts workshop to correct existing charts so as to have up to date charts and navigate safely

Preparing your next cruise Palma-Antibes

At home, examine your maps in all their details, and determine your next holidays cruise. Create waypoints, routes, calculate bearings and distances, determine your stops... ScanNav gives you all the necessary drawing and calculation tools to prepare you to the best for your trip.

If you do not wish to bring your PC on board, you will be able with a single click to transfer your prepared waypoints and routes to most existing GPS

Consult databases to determine your  stops

 Integration of the Mediterranean Guide

ScanNav and the Guide Méditerranée are interfaced so you can consult the guide by clicking on the chart in ScanNav, or position ScanNav at the corresponding location on the chart directly from the guide's web page.

Consultation can be done online, or your can get a CD-rom from the editor, that will let you consult pages locally without needing an internet connection.

The Guide Manche and Guide Atlantique are also available on the same principle, for the Channel and Atlantic areas.

Ready to Navigate

On your boat, connect your GPS to your PC, and you will see your boat moving on the chart in real time, with an immediate estimation of where you will be in a certain time using the heading line graduated in time periods. You also have access to all navigation parameters, such as heading, speed, remaining distance, estimated arrival time, etc...

You can also view (and memorize) any other instruments such as the sound, wind indicator, compass, loch in adapted repeaters. All calculated information may also be output to external NMEA displays, and you can interface the auto-pilot.

You can choose to follow a previously created route, or navigate to a single waypoint, alarms will warn you of any cross track error, arrival on waypoints, proximity of danger areas... You can mark instant waypoints such as MOB, fishing spots, anchor areas, or any other events. You can also associate photographs to waypoints.

"Seamless" management of charts:
You just tell once to ScanNav where your maps are on your disk (or CD-ROM), he will then manage them automatically to show the best fitted chart(s) on screen according to current location and scale level. Several maps may be combined together automatically so as to cover the whole screen, even if at different scales. You will therefore never have a partial blank screen even if navigating on borders of the map.

Water Level: SNTides / SHOMAR
vue annuaire

ScanNav includes in standard the SNTides water height module, based on SHOMAR calculation kernel (© SHOM 2010 - France - Contrat n° 114/2010), therefore insuring a perfect security (precision identical to the paper atlas for French coasts), with also a worldwide coverage (1075 sites worldwide, including 150 in mainland France and 42 on the French coast overseas)

View instantly the height over a sound at a given time, instantly determine the hours of crossing thresholds based on your draft and keel clearance, etc...  Interective graphic curves, and/or text tables.

Tidal Currents module
Cliquez pour arreter/demarrer l'animation

ScanNav handles tidal information by overlapping tidal currents on your map for any time, according to the hour and amplitudes of tides. It is also interfaced with the WXTide third party software to show heights of tides.

The data to calculate currents are originated from the SHOM (authorization n° 30/2005).

Click here for details on available currents areas. In this version, only French coasts (Including the Channel) are available.

A.I.S. Module (Automatic Identification System)
Animation AIS
an A.I.S. transponder (transmitter) is obligatory on all ships above 300tx
A simple AIS receiver Connected to your pc will give you information on ships in a range of 25NM (VHF antenna). Position, heading, speed, rate of turn every 30 seconds and more complete information such as the name, status, type of vessel, destination... every 6 minutes.

Detected boats are shown on the map and/or in a text list logging all their information. ScanNav manages an anti-collision system with visual and/or audible alarms according the other vessels routes compared to your own.
All displayed items and alarms are fully customisable.

GRIB module: Overlay Weather Forecasts
Origine Noaa, Cliquez pour arreter/demarrer l'animation

Using standard GRIB files ScanNav lets you overlay weather forecasts ( Wind, pressure, swell, precipitations, temperatures) directly on your map. GRIB files can be downloaded using regular cell phones when in covered area, or using satellite or BLU (emission/reception) connections when in the great blue.

World scale (grid step around 50nm) GRIB files originated from the Noaa can be downloaded free.

Origine Météorem

In cooperation with METEOREM, we propose affordable subscriptions for high resolution grib files (around 8NM grid step)

Back from your cruise

ScanNav keeps track of every information issued from your GPS or other connected instruments, and therefore gives you a graphical journal, letting you analyze your trip in all its details (doesn't substitute to the obligatory legal paper journal)

If you didn't bring your pc onboard or if it was off during navigation, you still can after your trip download tracks from most current gps, so as to visualize and analyze them in ScanNav.

Google-Earth interoperability

Anim GoogleEarth

You can capture Google-Earth screen-shots, and include and georeference the result in ScanNav within seconds using the charts workshop, so as to incorporate as an additional navigation aid.

You can also export your tracks, routes and waypoints to view them in Google Earth. This can be very usefull for example to send your tracks to your friends for them to review after a cruise, if they don't have a version of ScanNav.

View Aerial photographs as maps

With the MrSid file format support, you can use aerial photographs of the French coasts, or satellite photographs (world coverage), both available free on Internet. Although not real navigation maps, they constitute a good additional navigation aid, as they are very precise, and give you another vision of the coasts and nature of the bottom. (click here for more details)

A library of waypoints associated to oblique photographic views of most harbors and splits of France is also provided free of charge (origin SHOM, precision 1 minute of arc)

Terrestrial use

ScanNav also supports UTM and Lambert projections and is therefore also adapted for terrestrial cartography and use (excursion, mountain bike, car, agriculture, ...)
