Index ScanNav Tidal Currents Module
The Tidal Currents module of ScanNav allows you to overlay the currents to your charts, in real time, or at any selected day and time.
You can plan your navigation according to these, either manually, or in conjunction with the new Routing module, available from version 17 of ScanNav (release planned for the Paris 2016 show). It also provides access to the  Currents
Grib file download service based on data issued from Mercator / MyOcean.
The currents are dependent on the SnTides water height module based on the Shomar calculation engine of the SHOM. SnTides is included in the base module. Since Shomar's forecasts are limited to two years, it is alternatively possible to use the external program WXTides for water height.

The currents source data are issued either from the SHOM UJA data, the UKHO data, or  GRIB files download service

The tidal Currents module of ScanNav is sold as an extension comprising the following elements:

- License extension: 60 Euros (VAT included) letting you overlay tidal currents to the map according to your parameters choices. Currents data is originated from the SHOM (reproduction authorization n° 30/2005), and heights of tides is calculated by the third party software WXTide

- One or more of the available Currents Zones: 40 Euros (VAT included) (see list below)

Currents GRIB file service: data issued from Mercator/MyOcean

ScanNav hosts a GRIB download service with  Currents data issued from Mercator - MyOcean. These data are transformed into Grib by the ScanNav server, and updated twice a day.
The Grib files can be downloaded directly using an http protocol, or by email requests. They are compressed so as to limit download times.
This service is free of charge, but you must first register . Click here to access the registration form.

The models used to generate the Grib files are the following:

  IBI Model (Iberian Irish Biscay):
  • Resolution 1/36°
  • Forecasts up to 5 days by 1 hour step
  • Integrates tidal currents and wind effects.

  • Resolution 7km
  • Forecasts up to 6 days by 1 hour step
  • Integrates tidal currents and wind effects.

Modèle MED

You also have access to Currents Grib files for model RTOFS from the Noaa which is more suitable for offshore navigation than for coastal navigation. These are Oceanic currents that cover the North Atlantic at 1/20 °, giving forecasts up to 6 days in one hour steps. These grib files can be downloaded with the Currents or Grib modules
